Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Grades: 7-12
This class is an entrepreneurship and small business class geared to encourage, inspire, and train up the next generation of small business owners. According to the SBA (U.S. Small Business Administration), a small business is defined by firm revenue (ranting from $1 million) and by employment (from 100 to over 1,500 employees). There are over 32 million small businesses in the United States, so the chance that your student will be a small business owner is highly likely. As a tax professional and business coach, most small business owners don’t have fundamental business knowledge, like how to read a financial statement to see the financial health of their business, or know the difference between accounts payable and accounts receivable. Up to 90% of start of businesses fail in the first 3 years. Why? We have found that most business owners, while hard working at their skill, don’t have the business background to keep the doors open.
The goal of the this class is to train up the next generation of business owners and set them up with a strong foundation, enriching, and equipping them for college and the business world. Our aim is to bring real world experience in the different aspects of business to help direct these future capitalists of America.

My name is Julia Carlos and I started doing accounting for the family business when I was in junior high. I always maintained the books for that company until my mom retired from it. My husband and I attended Cal State Fullerton, where he got his degree in accounting, and I got my degree in business law. Throughout college, I worked in the home building industry. I started as the receptionist and worked my way up to controller during the worst economic crisis we’ve ever witnessed. I received real world training on how to keep a company afloat during a bad economy. To add to my résumé, I was also a Realtor. Rene and I decided to go out on our own and we started Summit Tax and Accounting Advisors. We did tax preparation and saw a need for good quality bookkeeping, business coaching, and business friendly tax strategies. We started our second company, Western Premier Business Coaching, after that to accommodate small businesses. We are small business advocates, and when business owners are informed and knowledgeable about their company, they make better business decisions and are overall stronger. The more small businesses we have in the country, the stronger this country is. We saw a need for this class in junior high and high school. College business classes teach you how to work for big corporations, not how to be a small business owner. That’s why we aim to equip the next generation of small business owners.
