Game Theory: Analyzing Strategies through Play

Course Description:

"Game Theory" is an engaging and interactive class designed to explore the fundamental concepts of strategic decision-making through the lens of various games. From classic board games to intricate card games and tabletop adventures, this course delves into the realm of gaming to unravel the principles of Game Theory. Students will not only enjoy playing a diverse array of games but also develop a robust analytical framework to understand the underlying strategies and apply critical thinking skills.

Throughout the semester, students will engage in a hands-on approach to learning, using games as the primary tool for understanding complex concepts. By dissecting the rules, dynamics, and interactions within each game, participants will gain insight into decision-making processes, strategic thinking, and the application of tactics to achieve desired outcomes.

Class Structure:

The course will consist of a blend of lectures, discussions, and game-playing sessions. Students will have the opportunity to engage in both competitive and cooperative games, enabling them to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting. Analytical discussions following game sessions will encourage students to reflect on strategies employed, understand the implications of their decisions, and assess the effectiveness of various approaches.

 

  1. Settlers of Catan: This board game emphasizes resource management, negotiation, and decision-making, showcasing the importance of trade-offs and alliances in achieving victory.
  2. Oregon Trail: This game balances working as a team or working as an individual while learning the difference between luck and stratagy
  3. Pandemic: A cooperative board game that demonstrates teamwork, decision-making under pressure, and the concept of collective victory or defeat.
  4. The Resistance/Avalon: A social deduction game focusing on hidden roles and bluffing, highlighting trust, deception, and reading opponents' intentions.
  5. Diplomacy: Known for its negotiation and diplomacy mechanics, this game involves alliances, betrayal, and understanding the balance of power.
  6. Ticket to Ride: Teaches the importance of risk-taking, optimizing routes, and adapting strategies based on opponents' moves.
  7. Ultimate Werewolf: Similar to The Resistance, it explores bluffing, deduction, and understanding group dynamics.
  8. Risk: A classic world domination game that emphasizes risk assessment, long-term planning, and understanding the consequences of aggressive versus defensive strategies.
