World of Animals Science GRADES 1-3 Course Description: Children love animals and have a natural curiosity about them. “World of Animals” is designed to ride that wave of curiosity and equip children with an understanding of the animal world like they have never experienced before. This introductory science class for young learners, highlights God's design in creation. First semester will focus on vertebrate animals such as mammals, birds, fish, and amphibians. Second semester will complete the study of vertebrates with reptiles, before moving on to invertebrate animals. We will learn about all five groups of Arthropoda (such as insects, spiders, crustaceans), mollusks (clams, snails, octopus, squid), cnidarians (jellyfish, coral, anemones), echinoderms (starfish, sand dollars, urchins), sponges, and worms. Each week will include a hands-on project and/or lab to reinforce the animal/topic of the week. Occasionally animal specimens will be observed in class with our study. Each week the homework will include 1-2 pages of reinforcement activities in the student book. These reinforcement pages are meant to drive the points home which were covered in class and serve as a link for the parent to know what topics were covered each week. This is a comprehensive full science course for the year with no additional curriculum to purchase. Cost of Class (per semester): $280 (This fee includes lab materials and student books). Upon registration, a $50 non-refundable deposit will be due, which is applied to the cost of the course.
I have designed this course as a custom option pulling together many sources and adapting them to be perfectly suited to younger learners without the heavy focus on extensive scientific vocabulary and instead with a bent towards exploration through hands-on projects and analogies to bring these complex concepts to life for young learners. The course materials fee includes all the materials for the class, including the student books. Each quarter, every 8 weeks, your student will move on to the next book. This keeps the size of the book which they will need to carry back and forth each week much smaller and avoids weighing down their backpacks with heavy curriculum. Just perfectly sized for young learners. A detailed syllabus will be provided at the start of the course.
