Description

Class Title: Creating Books

Grades: 4th-6th

Course Description:
Writing and artistic design will clash in this class as students learn the process of making
books. The students will write a variety of essays and stories, including expository,
narrative, descriptive, and poetry. Students will brainstorm and be given direction in
class, then do most of the writing and revising at home.
We will observe and study the illustrations of Caldecott winners to get an eye for page
layout and design features. Students will be encouraged to try different styles in each of
their books.
They will combine their artwork with the written story and put it into a bound book.
After each book is complete with binding and all, we will have time for each author to
read their newly ‘published’ book, which allows each student to practice public speaking
skills.
Your student will soon be an author and illustrator!

Bio:
After earning her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential at Cal State Fullerton, Arika’s first
teaching position was in the Kindergarten classroom. Since then, she has held various
K-9th grade positions teaching public, private, virtual, and home school classes.
Teaching over the past 20+ years has allowed Arika to understand better how each
student learns. She can make learning interactive, engaging, and fun through a
conversational style classroom and by giving positive encouragement. Therefore,
students will be more knowledgeable and inspired after attending classes.
During the past 13 years, Arika has been homeschooling her two daughters, both in
college now, and helping homeschool families navigate their homeschooling journey.
She also enjoys coaching homeschool moms by assisting them in gaining confidence
and clarity while following God's lead. However, if you asked her what she does with
her free time, she’d say drinking tea, napping, or reading a book.
