Class Title: California History
Grades: 3-5th
Course Description: After taking this course, students will have a deeper knowledge
and appreciation of the rich history of our beautiful state. In class, students will
discuss the reading assignments, learn through hands on projects such as journaling,
song, arts, and crafts. At home, students will read and complete comprehension
questions. Students will read 4 literature books this semester.
Topics we will cover include: the geography of California, Spanish explorers,
California missions, Mexican-American War, Gold Rush, the transcontinental
railroad, and the Great Depression. This is a two-semester course.

Bio: Julia Hsu lives in Laguna Niguel with her husband, two children, and their
beloved dog, Maple. She received her bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine, a
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from UC Irvine, and a master's degree in
Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University. She has taught various
grade levels ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. She has worked in both
public and private school settings and is a homeschool mom herself. Her passion
has always been teaching in the classroom and creating a hands-on environment
for learning.
