Class Title: Communication and Speech
Grades: 7th-9th
Course Description:
Which came first the speaker or the listener? In this class, we will be practicing the skills
of both. This class will incorporate three components: analyzing and debating words
through famous quotations, practicing meaningful small talk, and delivering impromptu/
formal speeches.
With the incorporation of fun speech activities, the students will gain confidence in their
public speaking abilities. We will focus on verbal and non-verbal skills, the specific
words we use and hear, and making meaningful small talk that is directed and purposeful.
During the second semester, we will also practice a more formal speech expression. The
students will learn to develop and deliver Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation,
Persuasive, and Mars Hill speeches. They will use the skills accumulated during class
instruction to give speeches.
Homework: Most weeks, there will be no homework, however, during second semester,
the students will need to memorize speeches.
