9th Grade English: Literary Analysis

Course Description:
What makes a great story? In this class, we will study the development of theme
through figurative language and literary techniques. We will enjoy classic works such as
The Call of the Wild and The Lord of the Flies, as well as selections of poetry, short
stories, and nonfiction on a wide range of topics. Class time will focus on discussion
and skill-building activities. Students will enhance writing skills by exploring reasons for
writing: to entertain, to inform, to persuade, and to describe. At home, students will be
expected to spend three hours a week on grade-level reading and writing responses.
Cost Per Semester:
$300. No supply fees. Parents are responsible for purchase of books listed on syllabus.
Not eligible for charter funding.

Bio:
Carrie Lucas has spent over fifteen years as a homeschooling mom and high school
teacher. Now that her children are grown, she continues to be passionate about the
opportunities that homeschooling brings to meet each student’s individual needs and
capabilities. Her goal is to inspire a love of learning, and to help young believers
become effective communicators. Whether the subject is Shakespeare or Roman
history, she loves helping students build confidence in their own ability to find
connections between their studies, their faith, and their world.
