Foundations of Writing
Grades: 6th-8th
This is a course designed for middle school students to feel confident in their academic writing assignments. Through the use of Jane Schaffer inspired writing techniques, we will remove the mystery and obscure nature of writing and create confidence through clarity of expectations. Students will know how to receive an academic writing prompt and decipher whether to write a narrative, informative, or argument paper. They will learn the academic outline formula for writing a strong thesis and how to support their thesis with textual evidence.
Each grade level will have cross curricular writing topics that will reinforce Science and Social Studies topics for their grade level. In addition, students will learn proper MLA format for their writing and Works Cited and be able to transfer those skills to their other course content.
Charter students will be able to use the course materials and content for their samples.
