Description

Literature Circle

Grade: 5th - 6th Grade

In the 5th/6th Literature Circle course, your students will be exposed to children’s literature that is rich in character development, academic language, and themes of redemption and growth. Reading is truly a joy of mine, and I am so excited to bring to life some remarkably well-written stories to your students. I believe reading provides an opportunity for students to be deep thinkers and learn how to draw conclusions from a different vantage point. This course will have a heavy emphasis on historical fiction, with a few of my favorite fantasy novels as well. A few of the books planned for this year will also pair well with my US History course. Homework will include weekly reading assignments, along with some comprehension questions and “thinking deeper” activities. I am looking forward to what this year will bring as I strive to foster a love for reading with your students!

I will send a finalized booklist in June, but novels may include some of the following:

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone

Maniac MaGee by Jerry Spinelli

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riodan

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare

The Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls.

Cost: $275
