Description

Title of Class: Literature & Writing

Grades: 1st & 2nd Grade

*Students who took this course in 1st grade can repeat it for 2nd grade! We will use a
different set of books.

Course Description:
In this course, students will build skills to properly formulate a complete sentence to
write a four-sentence paragraph by the end of the year. Knowing the components of a
complete sentence is a crucial foundation for paragraph writing. It can be introduced in
the early educational years of 1st and 2nd grade by teaching writing through literature.
During the first semester, we will use picture books and short stories to build sentence
fluency through engaging activities. In the second half of the year, we will build on their
sentence foundation using the Jane Schaffer method of writing. Here we will learn the
difference between the topic, details, and concluding sentence. This will provide a basic
introduction to writing taught through short chapter books. Homework will be minimal
and build upon the lessons taught in class. Writing a paragraph doesn’t have to be
intimidating when you have the foundational skills to build complete sentences!

Cost Per Semester: $275
