Description

Class Title: Nature Study

Grades: 1st- 3rd

Course Description: This science class will ignite a love for God’s creation in an engaging, hands-on, fun way. “Nature Study” helps lay a great foundation for formal science study in the future by allowing exploration, a love for investigation, and a sense of stewardship of the Earth. We can tell our children that “the heavens declare the glory of God” but until we inspire them to see it, touch it, and awe in it then they will not experience its true depth.

We will be going through the seasons of the year starting with autumn and completing nature-inspired projects that are appropriate for each season.

We will be reading through the following books in class: Humungous Fungus; Fields and Flowers; Bloom; What’s Inside a Flower; The Magic & Mystery of Trees; The Boreal Forest; A Butterfly is Patient; We Travel So Far; Time to Sleep; Bees: A Honeyed History; Over and Under the Snow; Snowflakes In Photographs; and The Farm That Feeds Us.

Every few weeks we will be reading through a nature-inspired picture book with amazing graphics and illustrations during class. We will also be memorizing a new nature-inspired poem each unit. Then we will complete many projects to go along with our studies, such as pressed flowers, leaf skeletons, leaf rubbings, sun prints, butterfly symmetry drawings, just to name a few! A detailed syllabus will be provided at the start of the course.

Textbook/Materials needed: You will not be required to purchase any curriculum or textbook. If you choose to add the above titles below to your homeschool library you may, but it is not required. This is a comprehensive full science course for the year with no additional curriculum required to purchase.

Class Max: 18 students

Cost of Class (per semester): $310 ($250 class fee + $60 materials fee) per semester. This fee includes all project or lab materials and student notebook.
