Woodworking/Furniture Building:
Grades 4th-12th
In this class, students will build a project of their own choosing from raw lumber. This is not “kit assembly” – students will use all the power and hand tools needed to start with a raw piece of lumber and build a (small) piece of furniture, a decoration, or anything else they would like that can be built from wood. Students in Todd’s woodworking classes have built many projects including a bookshelf, desk, potting table, art box, nightstand, utility tables & shelves, toy horse, and much more!
Pictures of many of the projects are available on Todd’s website at www.CaliforniaAthletics.com.
Tuition for this class does not include the wood needed for each student's project. Parents will need to purchase or pay Todd to purchase the wood for their project. It also does not include the finish - paint, stain, polyurethane - which usually will need to be applied at home. It is not a good idea to transport a freshly painted piece home in your car! Tuition does include all other consumables - sandpaper, screws, nails, glue, saw blades, broken drill bits, broken tools, and the use of all tools.
This class is good for students of all ages. They will build a project suitable to their age and skill level. Keep in mind that parents need to be able to transport the project back & forth to class each week as it is being worked on! So no armoires!
You also need to keep in mind that in this class, woodworking, furniture building, and construction in general are COLLABORATIVE efforts. Most of the projects we have built are IMPOSSIBLE to do by yourself. Even the most advanced woodworkers need help during the process. We have students help others with projects and work collaboratively. This is a skill that every student needs to develop in the educational process. Colleges look for students to show how they have worked on collaborative projects.
Each student will be "in charge" of their own project and gets to decide who does what, and students will do the bulk of the work on their own project, but it is impossible in any shop to have every student working on their own project at the same time. We will work on 3-4 projects at a time, complete them, and then move to the next set of projects. Students will learn more by being involved and helping or observing everyone's project as much as possible. The plan is for each student to build one project through the semester and help/learn from all the projects.
Todd has many years of construction experience. He has built many pieces of furniture over 30 years of building, including built ins and free-standing furniture. Todd does construction work when he is not teaching and has completed many bathroom renovations, done mold restoration, built retaining walls, and built countless fences. Todd has the experience to help your students learn at their basic and intermediate level for this class. Students will have FUN and build something they want to keep!
