Course Description:
This course guides students through many works of literature while developing their reading
comprehension, literary analysis, and writing skills. Using a selection of engaging and
thematically rich novels, students will explore a wide range of genres, time periods, and cultures.
Throughout the year, specific writing styles such as creative writing, compare/contrast essays,
argumentative writing, expository pieces, and literary analysis.
Through thoughtful discussion and grammar integration, students will learn to identify literary
devices, analyze character development, and make meaningful connections across texts. Weekly
class meetings include a consistent format with quickwrites, literature discussion, and IEW
writing instruction. Writing projects include both formal essays and creative works, culminating
in final presentations that build confidence in written and oral communication.
In addition to deepening their understanding of literature, students will grow as thinkers,
communicators, and storytellers.
Parents, please note that you will play an important role in the editing process. You will be one of
their main editors, along with their peer reviews. Your main role will be a curious questioner,
which will help them expand their ideas.
Homework: Students will have 3-4 hrs of homework/week, including reading, writing
and workbook exercises.
