Class Title: English 9 Grades: 9 Course Description: This English 9 course will begin the year focusing on annotation and literary analysis. We will dive deep and practice solidifying the method of annotation and the importance of analysis. Students will annotate short stories and poems first and then move on to longer written pieces, like novels. As they read these, they will be looking for such elements as allusions, symbolism, theme, worldview, imagery, figures of speech, and irony. As the semester goes on, the students will also practice writing expository, narrative, persuasive, and descriptive essays. They will work through the writing process of brainstorming, arranging, writing, and revising. Embedded throughout the year, the students will give oral presentations about their writing because what’s the point in writing if no one will read or hear it? Also, it is always good to practice public speaking skills. Homework: Students will have 2-3 hrs of homework/week, including reading, writing and workbook exercises.
