Grammar and Phonics Workshop

Grades: K-1

Course Description:

Children will learn basic grammar skills (nouns, verbs, punctuation, capitalization, etc.) while doing hands-on/sensory activities (using blocks to build letters, writing letters in shaving cream, etc.). Zoo Phonics, a fun animal based curriculum, will be used to learn/reinforce letters and sounds. Important handwriting skills (proper grip, letter formation, etc.) will be emphasized. This class is designed to lay a good foundation for IEW and to prepare your child to become a confident writer.

I will be using the gentle but challenging First Language Lessons: Level 1 from Well Trained Mind as our textbook. This beautiful and comforting old-school curriculum mixes in grammar with narrations, memory work, poems, copywork, paintings, and speaking. Do you remember the days when we had to speak in full sentences?  Some topics we cover are: full names and addresses, family relationships, the days of the week, months of the year, and seasons- all the information that kids should know, but may have gaps in!   

Cost Per Semester: $240 (plus $25 for materials)

Materials: Folders and printouts will be provided, no textbook needed

Bio: Ever since she was a little girl, Esther knew she wanted to be a teacher. She grew up in New York, got her undergraduate degree in Social Sciences and went on to get her master’s degree in Elementary Education. She has many years of experience teaching in the classroom and church setting. For the past 10+ years, she homeschooled her 3 kids (Caleb, Emma, and Olivia), taught at various co-op groups, and has been enjoying teaching at PC Prep, her “happy place”. Esther loves to garden, visit museums, read old books, and drink coffee with Jay, her husband. Esther is grateful for the PC Prep community and excited to serve God through one of her biggest passions.
