Class Title: 5th/6th Literature Circle
Grades: 5th & 6th Grade
Course Description: In the 5th/6th Literature Circle course, your students will be
exposed to children’s literature that is rich in character development, academic
language, and themes of redemption and growth. Reading is truly a joy of mine, and I
am so excited to bring to life some remarkably well-written stories for your students. I
believe reading provides an opportunity for students to be deep thinkers and learn how
to draw conclusions and view things from a different vantage point. This course will
have a heavy emphasis on historical fiction, with a few of my favorite fantasy novels as
well. A few of the books planned for this year will also pair well with my US History
course. Homework will include weekly reading assignments, along with some
comprehension questions and “thinking deeper” activities to prepare for class
discussions. I am looking forward to what this year will bring as I strive to foster a love
for reading with your students!
Booklist: There will be a total of six books. I will send a finalized booklist in June, but
will most likely include the following:
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Johnny Trieman by Esther Forbes
Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks
*Still deciding on the last one!
