Description

Readers Theater

Grades: 8–12

Minimum students: 8

Course Description

Readers Theater is an engaging fine arts elective designed to bring literature to life. In  this course, students will either read from published scripts or collaborate to create  their own. Because the focus is on expressive reading rather than memorization,  students will use voice, tone, pacing, and facial expression to make the text come alive.  Readers Theater allows us the luxury of lingering over a story—exploring its nuances,  emotions, and deeper meaning. We won’t simply read stories; we will experience  them. This class provides an entertaining and dynamic way to improve reading fluency,  strengthen comprehension, and increase retention.

Even the shyest students often grow in confidence as they perform in a supportive,  low-pressure environment where memorization is not required. Through shared  performance, students develop a strong sense of community while gaining valuable  communication skills. Participants will explore a variety of literary genres and have  opportunities to rehearse and perform for their peers.

Instructor Bio

Melissa holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences from The Master’s College. A homeschool  graduate herself, she has a deep appreciation for the flexibility and richness of home  education. Melissa and her husband served as missionaries in Spain for 11 years and  are now raising their three children.

During high school, Melissa was actively involved in her homeschool drama club and  participated in several productions, including *Anastasia*, in which she played the  grandmother—a role that memorably moved audience members to tears. Her love for  drama stems from its ability to cultivate meaningful life skills such as confidence,  empathy, communication, and community-building.

Melissa believes the arts play a vital role in personal development. The skills cultivated  through drama extend far beyond the stage and are foundational to success in

relationships, leadership, and lifelong learning. She is passionate about helping  students grow in both skill and confidence through the creative experience of Readers  Theater.
